How I became a professional photographer

My Journey Behind the Lens

From the moment I was given my first Kodak Colorsnap as a child, I was fascinated by the power of photography. This passion followed me through a design degree, years of personal projects and a long teaching career until, three years ago, I finally stepped fully into the work I’d always loved.

These days, you'll find me behind the lens for all sorts of adventures: creative, artistic portraits, high-energy live event photoshoots, brand storytelling, candid wedding photography, documentary work, and commercial projects. What connects everything I do is my love for storytelling and my commitment to showing people, and the things they care about, at their absolute best. My background in art and design is crucial and means I bring a deep understanding of colour, composition and light to every single shot, giving you images that are original, artistic and striking, even when we're working in tricky conditions.

Having spent years in the performing arts world, I've developed an almost sixth sense for live environments. I can feel when a moment is building, sense the energy shifting in a room, and anticipate those perfect, unrepeatable moments. Rather than hiding behind rapid-fire shooting, I trust my instincts to be in the right place at exactly the right moment, without getting in the way of the performance - clients tell me they hardly know I’m there!

The thing clients tell me most (and which I never take for granted) is that they feel genuinely cared for. I bring calm, collaborative energy to every shoot and take as much time as needed to get it absolutely right. That means offering guidance before we even meet, strong communication throughout the process and, above all, really understanding what you want your photographs to achieve.

When I'm not working, you'll probably find me playing bass in a local ska band or exploring the visual treasures of Whitby town and surrounding areas with my lovely dog Clover - lens cap always off! I'm proud that my images regularly appear in publications and are archived by local theatres and Whitby Museum, but the real magic happens in those moments when clients see their photos for the first time and their faces just light up. Seeing people recognise themselves, their stories, and their special moments reflected back honestly: that's what this is all about.

This isn't just my job; it's my art form and my way of serving others. If this sounds like the kind of photographer you're looking for, I'd love to talk.

The Studio

My studio is in the centre of Whitby in a Grade II listed late-Georgian terrace, where we have lived for over 20 years. The high ceiling is perfect when using studio lighting and backdrops. With a south-facing aspect, it allows for lovely natural-light shooting through original Georgian windows and, when using studio lighting, the shutters may be closed if necessary. Originally a main reception room, the studio is large enough for photoshoots from individuals to small groups. The space is also suitable for commercial photography, such as for photographing ranges of clothing for websites. For portraiture, I have a selection of high-quality backdrops and seating to choose from and a range of lighting setups can be used to suit the mood and style of the images. Set high above the road, surrounded by picturesque churches and other gardens, The Artistic Lens has a uniquely secluded location in the jewel of the Yorkshire Coast.

Testimonials: What clients say about my photography

It’s been several decades since I undertook studio portraiture for a range of clients. It’s a precise art, combining all the technicalities of lighting and exposure while at the same time engaging the sitter in conversation to make them feel at ease. Paul Armstrong has mastered the art and produces first class portraits. His attention to detail and dedication to exacting post-production is masterful. I can highly recommend that you seek him out for a professional portrait session.
